Statement-making outerwear

An absolute must in colder months!

I’m sure you’ve all heard the quote, “Style is a way to say who you are without saying a word.” Of course, this is something I live by, but what about in the colder months, when your style is covered up by a winter coat? The best way to make a statement when your cute outfit is covered is to wear a statement coat. I’ve rounded up my favorite printed coats + I’m giving you some tips on buying one (or two!) for yourself.

Don’t buy a fitted coat.

I’m sure you’re asking yourself why this is one of my tips. But think about it - in colder months, you generally wear bulkier, heavier clothing. Buying a coat that fits too closely to you won’t allow for anything warm and/or bulky underneath. If you do try to wear a sweater, the coat will feel tight and you’ll feel constricted and you won’t feel comfortable. Feeling comfortable is extremely important in having the confidence to pull of any stylish looks (I talk more about confidence in this post).

Buying a size up in coats will allow for the extra winter bulk. If you’re a little curvier, with a larger bust or broad shoulders, this is especially true. Also, pay attention to the details like belts and buttons, as belts can help cinch you in and buttons that are too large can bring attention to areas you may not want to accentuate.

From plaid to tiger to floral and tropical - the statement coats below (yes, even a white coat can make a statement!) are sure to have all heads turning when you walk past.

Buy what works with your wardrobe.

I’ve always been one to consider what’s currently in my closet before purchasing ANYTHING (thanks to my father and his sage advice). The same goes for your coat! Because this is a piece you’ll be wearing from work to dinner to weekend hangs, you have to think of your coat purchase as a fashion piece - something you can incorporate into (or elevate) your current wardrobe.

And while yes, you should be mindful of budget, try to think of it as an investment, moreso than an expensive one-time purchase. A coat you LOVE (which is the only coat you should be buying, IMO) is a coat you’ll be wearing every day. And that makes your cost per wear (CPW = Purchase Price / Total Wears) down to practically nothing! I use the CPW formula on coats, bags - any expensive purchase that I may feel a bit apprehensive about. Take a $450 coat that you wear consistently for a couple of months - that makes your CPW about $7.50!

You can never go wrong with a leopard print coat (or a leopard print anything, really!) - which is why I included 2! Another plaid coat, polka dot & bold colors round out my edit. Which one suits you best? Let me know in the comments!
